Annette Lake, and SNOW!

My friend Jen and I went out to enjoy the first snowy hike of the year at Annette Lake...beautiful!

Sunday, November 2, 2008

Oh, Look! It's November!

Ah yes, it's time for the gray, cloudy, rainy weather to set in. Fortunately, I like this weather (although I wouldn't like it all year). This was a great day as I was able to test out the new rain jacket and new hiking boots I got for my birthday for foul weather and they are GREAT!

What does it mean to "Believe"?

I was inspired by a recent conversation with friends to think about this again. The conversation was specifically about religious beliefs, but I think it applies to all belief. The recent death of my friend Tim also caused me to think about this more, not in the "what happens when I die" way that you might think, rather because of the lengthy conversations and debates that I enjoyed with Tim and Niki during my first two years of college. At that time, I was very obsessed with being able to explain exactly what I "believed", knowing exactly what I "believed" and being able to logically explain what I "believed".

In the last 10 years I have changed (in many ways!). One significant change is that I'm not as hung up on this as I used to be. I wouldn't say that I have any more, or any less, questions than I had when I was six years old. Some of my questions have changed, but the total number has not grown more or less. The change is that I decided to move beyond nailing down the minutia of my "beliefs" and instead focus on trying to figure out what they mean, or how they should impact my life. But is this copping out? What does it mean to believe something, anyway?

Does it mean to be logically certain about something based on a set of facts? (Such as believing in gravity because every time I drop something it falls to the ground? Or believing that I need to eat while hiking so that my body has enough energy to continue?)

Does it mean to act on something? (Such as getting married because one believes the other loves them and will stay with them forever? This is different from the above because there's no "proof" only evidence that one is making a good decision)

Does it mean to decide to believe something? Does deciding to believe something make it "true"? Is this sometimes the case?

There are probably many more definitions. More questions than answers (always), but I really hope it's not limited to the first definition.

The dictionary's first definition of belief is "to have confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reliability of something, although without absolute proof that one is right in doing so". I love this! This is hopeful!

I want to be freed from trying to "prove" things. Proving things is exhausting and I'm not convinced it's very productive.

Ready for a new month

Generally speaking, I love October. I love fall, the harvest, the changing colors, and our annual pumpkin carving party, the coming of the holiday season, the first frost and the promise of snow coming soon in the mountains!

This year, Jay and I got to enjoy a wonderful mini-break in Florida and a visit to his parents along with our apple collecting trip.

However, in the second half of the month, two friends from the past deciding to take their own lives, Jay having to deal with another suicide of a stranger on campus, and the month ended with a shooting in front of one of the high schools I work at, resulting in the death of a 16 year old and the life-threatening injuries of another.

I was not in the mood for Halloween this year, when it came right down to it.

Pumpkin Carving!

Forgot to put up photos of last weekend's annual pumpkin carving extravaganza! Yay for pumpkins (and their yummy seeds), power tools, bonfires, smores and another rain free year for the party!

Remembering Tim

Yesterday I attended the memorial service for my friend Tim. I won't attempt to make any kind of sense of this tragedy. It seems that Tim didn't know how important he was to so many people, and how his family and friends depended on him.

I don't really have it in me to say anything eloqent, but here are some words that have come to mind as I've been remembering him:

Curious
Intelligent
Hillarious
Fearless
Irreverent
Caring
Eloquent
Fish
Experiments
Plants
Glacier climbing
Flannel
Friend
Missed

The Gulf Coast

Last weekend we went to the Gulf Coast of Florida, near Pensacola, to celebrate Julie and Ed's wedding! It was gorgeous, and a wonderful time with great people!

Jay enjoyed lots of kayaking and snorkeling
Gen-xers on vacation enjoying group emailing, chatting and facebooking
