For year's, Jay and I did nothing to celebrate Valentine's day, or at least nothing standard. When we first met, we had a few years of a contest for the cheesiest under $5 gift we could find. It was fun for a couple years, but ran it's course.
Both of us have always felt like it was not only overly commercial (like a lot of things), and women are supposed to feel lonely (if single) and competitive (if partnered), while men are supposed to feel obligated and guilty. To me, it represents everything that can be wrong with relationships and their expectations in our society.
BUT, at the end of the day, it's a holiday about love, and who wouldn't want to celebrate that?!?!
Lately, the last few years in Seattle, we've been making and enjoying a nice, simple and local dinner at home, which has been really fun! This year we realized that we had entirely local food (including wine!) except for dessert chocolates (which could have been at least semi-local easily if we had thought of it.
Hooray for finding joy in Valentine's day at last!
